Earth Hour Results

Ottawa – Saturday, March 28, marked the City of Ottawa’s second consecutive year participating in the global initiative Earth Hour. From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., lights were turned out at businesses and homes throughout the city in order to reduce electrical consumption and raise awareness about climate change.

Once again, Ottawa has surpassed itself and has the electricity consumption figures to prove it – a 43,580 kilowatt-hour drop, or six per cent reduction.

“Not only does the increase from four per cent last year to a six per cent reduction in consumption this year save enough electricity to power 58 homes for a month, but it also demonstrates how a simple act conducted on a collective basis can make a difference,” said Mayor Larry O’Brien. “This year, we increased our effort to reach out to young people in classrooms all across the city, and I have no doubt that it was this extra effort that helped contribute to the success of Earth Hour 2009.”

Ottawa was one of the first cities in Canada and the world to participate in Earth Hour. This year, Ottawa joined 4,000 other cities in 88 countries around the globe in the growing initiative.

“I want to thank all residents, schools and businesses in Ottawa for participating, as well as my colleagues on Council for supporting the Earth Hour campaign,” said Mayor O’Brien. “I would also like to thank our partners – the Ottawa Sun / 24 Hours, the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, and, in particular, Rosemarie Leclair, President and CEO of the Hydro Group of Companies – for their contribution.”

Earth Hour is a global campaign, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour and take up the challenge of fighting global warming.
