Steel toes & Stilettos are right at home by Caroline Phillips, OTTAWA CITIZEN

There’s no place like Holts,” the Dorothy

Gale look-alike repeatedly said after Holt Renfrew shook things up with its edgy and eclectic fashion show for Habitat for Humanity NCR’s Steel Toes & Stilettos Gala, held Friday at The Westin.

Nearly 600 guests were transported, sans heel clicking, to a world of burlesque dancing, Mad Men madness and perfect party dresses, followed by a round of Holt Renfrew gift-filled boxes for everyone in the room.

U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson and his wife, Julie, had a great view of the runway from the dinner table they shared with Habitat NCR’s CEO, Donna Hicks, board president Johannes Ziebarth from Ziebarth Electrical Contractors, Enbridge regional GM Richard Campbell, Mayor Jim Watson and MPP Yasir Naqvi.

Rosemarie Leclair, head of the Ontario Energy Board, chaired the gala. It aimed to raise as much as $120,000 to cover the cost of building a home for a low-income family.

The gala’s new committee also included Leclair’s partner, communications strategist Joan Weinman, and Greenbridge Group’s Sheefra Brisbin, who brought Holt Renfrew on board. The committee’s “work hard, play hard” attitude continued into the morning, when Brisbin and fellow volunteer Raylene Lang-Dion had a 6 a.m. flight to catch to New York City for a birthday celebration with their hubbies.

CBC’s Adrian Harewood emceed while lawyer Lawrence Greenspon helped as charity auctioneer. Leclair was outbid on the Burberry bag from Holts that sold for $2,000 but she bought the Boston package donated by Porter Airline and The Westin.
